John grew up in Edmonton with seven sisters and one brother. He has a rich Croatian/Italian heritage, and, as the oldest son, was named John after his father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His family moved to Edmonton in 1952. He remembers drawing animals for show and tell at school but otherwise didn’t try to make art until coming to the Nina. John enjoys hiking in Edmonton’s river valley and especially loves going to the mountains. He also loves animals and is knowledgeable about environmental issues. He often incorporates nature imagery into his ceramics work. John works in the ceramics studio twice a week.
