Since it was founded in 2003, the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts (the Nina) has been home to one of Edmonton’s most exciting artist collectives, made up entirely of artists with developmental disabilities. What began as a collective of one has grown to include over 200 artists. Their artwork is exhibited locally and across Canada and has been included in international exhibitions. We opened in a rented space on 111 Avenue, but eventually outgrew it. In 2009, our collective moved to its current home on Alberta Avenue, proud to be in our own building and part of a community that has been successful in revitalizing through the arts.
Our Vision: At The Nina we believe that all people have the right to achieve their highest potential, which includes the right to creative expression. Creativity lies within everyone and can be powerfully expressed through the arts. The Nina believes in the importance of creation and exhibition of art by those who face barriers to artistic expression.
The Role
As a Casual Lead Artist, you will be offered shifts on an as-needed basis to provide coverage for staff absences, vacations, and other staffing needs. When shifts become available, the Studio Manager will contact casual employees to offer available hours.
Typical shifts are weekdays from 8:30AM – 3:30PM.
There are no guaranteed hours, and casual employees may accept or decline shifts as they are offered.
Key Responsibilities:
• Working knowledge of the techniques and materials in an artist’s studio
• Able to answer questions and demonstrate techniques
• Work with support staff to assist individuals
• Assist artists with starting projects and cleaning up
• Cleaning duties as required for health and safety
• Record keeping for projects and attendance
• Retaining notes of behaviour and health issues, as needed for the individual
• Positive mentorship and support to Members of the art Collective
• Must ensure that the artistic activities and support provided is consistent with the Vision/Mission, beliefs, goals, and policies of the organization
• Must work as a team with the other professional artistic staff
• Must ensure proper care and storage of artwork (in progress or completed)
• Assist members of the Collective to manage their own materials and portfolios to the extent of their capacity
Working Conditions
Physical Environment: Standing and walking throughout the studio, some light lifting
There are four studios: Painting/Drawing, Ceramics, Printmaking, and Fibre Arts with the associated artistic materials.
Requirements: You have a minimum post-secondary degree or diploma in fine arts, or an arts related discipline or equivalent lived experience, and you are a professional, practicing artist. You possess the ability to work in a team environment and have a great work ethic. You demonstrate flexibility in your approach and can influence and motivate others. A police check for the voluntary sector is a requirement.
What We Offer
Compensation: $23.25 hourly wage
This is a casual, variable hours position with no guaranteed hours. Shifts are offered on an as-needed basis and may be accepted or declined. This position is based in Edmonton Alberta.
