Job Opportunity: Gallery Preparator

The Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts (the Nina) is seeking a part-time Gallery Preparator. This role reports to the CEO and works in consultation with the Director of Communications and Artistic Outreach to plan and execute exhibitions in the Nina’s Stollery Gallery and external venues. The Gallery Preparator is responsible for all technical aspects of preparing, installing, and striking work for exhibitions as well as the care and maintenance of artwork and the gallery space. Administrative and curatorial duties associated with this role can be done in collaboration with the Director of Communications & Artistic Outreach. 

Job Details

Job Title: Gallery Preparator

Location: Edmonton

Status: 15-20 hours per week (daytime Monday – Friday), in person. Potential for successful candidate to pick up more hours in studios as Lead Artist if qualified and desired

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience

Reports to: CEO. Liaises with Director Communication and Artistic Outreach

Travel: Some travel, mainly local, is required. Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle

Physical Environment: Lifting and moving of gallery materials and furniture is required. Must be comfortable working on a ladder/heights

 

Responsibilities

Curatorial duties (in consultation with Director of Communication and Artistic Outreach)

  • Work with exhibition committee to put out calls for exhibitions, develop and maintain annual exhibition schedule for internal (Stollery) and external exhibitions (including receptions)
  • Develop and maintain installation calendar and maintain list of all exhibitions (internal and external) to be used for statistical purposes
  • Curate or work with guest artists to curate exhibitions in Stollery Gallery
  • Curate work for external public galleries and spaces

Gallery/installation duties

  • Preparation, installation, and de-installation of art in Stollery Gallery
  • Preparation, transportation, installation, and de-installation of art in external venues
  • Installing vinyl signage

Facility/equipment management

  • Preparation/repair of gallery walls and floors and preparation/reparation of external venues as may be required
  • Preparation and storage of artwork in a safe and organized manner
  • Management of preparation and storage areas
  • Assist in waste management/recycling duties
  • Procurement and storage of hardware, tools, and shop supplies as needed
  • Maintenance of light fixtures throughout building
  • Routine perimeter check and litter pick-up of property
  • Handy person duties as may be required

Requirements

Education:

  • Minimum post-secondary degree or diploma in fine arts or an arts related discipline. Comparable experience in-lieu of education will be considered
  • Must be a professional, practicing artist

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years working in a gallery, museum, or related setting
  • At least 3–5 years as a practicing, professional artist
  • Curatorial and installation experience in a variety of settings required
  • Framing/matting experience required
  • Building maintenance and basic repair experience preferred

Required competencies/knowledge/skills/abilities:

  • Familiarity with numerous artistic mediums and knowledge of art history and contemporary art
  • Ability to manage physical assets, manage supplies
  • Ability to work with guest artists, external galleries/venue personnel
  • Good written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with Nina staff, artists, and volunteers
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, shifting environment
  • Good judgement, decision making skills
  • Carpentry skills an asset
